Reliability

The field reliability of BP Solar modules is demonstrated by our record of having less than one module failure per every 4200 module years. BP Solar’s superior quality is due to our precision engineering, our accelerated testing program, and such design features as:

  • Perimeter bussing, extra clearance and multiple solder joints for extra reliability.
  • The strongest frames on the industry.  BP Solar frames are made of corrosion resistant alloys to maintain their strength even in harsh environments.
     
  • Proven encapsulation system.  BP Solar modules use the same tempered glass for impact resistance as required for windows in the automobile industry.
  • Cool bypass diodes for long term power.  When partial shading of a module occurs, the shaded cells act as a load, creating heat buildup which can actually damage the module.  Preventing this heat buildup is the critical function of bypass diodes.  They act as valves passing the current around the shaded portion.
  • World Class Cells made in America.  BP Solar was a pioneer in polycrystalline technology.
  • Tight power tolerance and third party measurement for superior power and value.  BP Solar modules have tight power tolerances, which means that a BP Solar system will usually produce more power than an equally rated competitor system with wider tolerances.
     

    Unlike many other solar manufacturers’ practices, our module power measurements are calibrated to
    World Radiometric References through the European Solar Test Installation at Ispra, Italy. This third party measurement provides proof that company claimed module ratings represent true power.

Advanced technology with promise for the future!

To understand the importance of String Ribbon technology is to grasp the elegant balance it strikes between conventional and emerging technologies.

String Ribbon combines the best attributes of conventional crystalline silicon and emerging thin films. It achieves the reliability, stability, high efficiency, and market acceptance of crystalline silicon - without the inherent cost and waste of sawing. And it embodies the efficient material utilization and potential for continuous processing of thin films, but with a more manufacturable process.

In the String Ribbon technique, two high temperature strings are pulled vertically through a shallow silicon melt, and the molten silicon spans and freezes between the strings (diagram below). The process is continuous: long strings are unwound from spools; the melt is replenished; and the silicon ribbon is cut to length for further processing, without interrupting growth. This advantage in material efficiency means String Ribbon yields over twice as many solar cells per pound of silicon as conventional methods. Additionally, the resulting distinctive shape of the solar cell allows for a high packing density.

Ongoing technology development shows great promise for even lower cost. Early experiments have produced 15% solar cells on thin 100 micron wafers. And downstream, in cells and modules, Evergreen Solar is developing processes that are simple, continuous, non-vacuum, high throughput, environmentally benign, and energy efficient.
